Activities of DERT during 2009-10
- Evening Coaching Classes in Science, Mathematics and English for Tribal Student. With one of the aims of providing opportunity and facility of free Coaching to potential bright pupils from poor families specially in Rural areas, who cannot afford private tuition. The target group is Class X students in 97 centres.
- Special Coaching classes XI1 Tribal Students of Meghalaya. Pursuing Commerce Stream with one of the aims being the dropout rate at the Higher Secondary habit to shift to other stream apart from the Commerce stream after enrolment in the above stream.
- Training of Lower Primary School Teachers on Foundation Course for Disabled Children in distance mode: to help the Teachers to undertake appropriate classroom management for children with disabilities and also to undertake remedial on dual teaching of mentally retarded and learning disabled children, 41 teachers has been trained.
- Integration of Disabled Children in the Mainstream of Education: with the purpose of integrating them with the general community and to prepare them for normal growth to enable them to face life with courage and confidence. Schools which are Integrating Children with Special needs are identified and students with special needs are being assisted financially.
- State Talent Search at the Close of the Secondary stage for Tribal Students of Meghalaya: Under the Scheme for 2008-09, 60 students have been awarded monetary incentive to pursue their studies especially with regards to Science and Mathematics.
- State Talent Search at the Close of the Upper Primary Stage. During the Scheme for 2008-09, 150 meritorious Tribal students have been awarded monetary incentive to developn and nurture their talents especially academically as they proceed towards the Secondary Level.
- Computer Training for Upper Primary School Teachers. With the purpose of making teachers computer literate and thus making a positive impact in the quality of their teaching. They are being taught to access the internet 140 teachers were benefited during 2008-09.
- National Means Cum Merit Scholarship Scheme. With the objective to provide financial assistance to meritorious students of rural areas in classes IX and X.
- Special Coaching Classes for Class XI1 Tribal Students of Meghalaya pursuing Science Stream. With the aim of enhancing the performance of tribal students studying in Class XI1 (Science Strearn).The Scheme involves 10 urban Centres and 5 Rural centers across the state.
- Conduct of D.Ed, JTTC Examination. DERT conduct the annual examination of the TTIs of the State in including the DIETS and BTCs & NTSs. Prior to 2006, these examinations were conducted by the Meghalaya Board of School Education.
- Conduct of PSS and UPSS Examination. DERT also conducts the Merit Scholarship Examinations at the close of Class IV for Lower Primary Students and Class VII for Upper Primary Students. These examinations were earlier conducted by the Meghalaya Board of School Education and usually held between 2/12/08 to 11/12/08.
- Conduct of one month Induction Training for the newly recruited Teachers - The DERT has been holding Training Programmes for the newly recruited Teachers which has been successfully conducted in the different Districts of the State, whereby, the DERT acts as a Nodal Agency for the said Programme.
- Studies Conducted Study of Reason of Large Decline in enrolment between Classes I and I1 in Meghalaya. - Completed in 2009 - Funded by EdCIL, New Delhi. (b) Effectiveness of supervisory Practices in Primary Schools. (c) Teachers Absenteeism and Students at the Upper Primary and Lower Primary stages (d) Evaluation Practices.
- Launching of EduSAT Network Programmes: Meghalaya EduSAT, has a definite role in meeting the goals of ISRo in promoting usage of space technology for the benefit of common man> The continous expansion of space applications programs like Tele-education, Tele-Medicine, etc. Reiterates the increasing role played by this Hub in providing direct benefits to the state of Meghalaya. This, Meghalaya EduSAT continues to pursue successful goals on all fronts in meetng the objectives of space based societal applications for the State's development especially in the field of education. Education in the state was given a huge fillip with the launch of EduSAt Network, by the Minister of Higher and Technocal Educatopn, Mr. Manas Chaudhuri on June 30, 2008. An Indian Space Research organisation (ISRO) initiative, The EduSAT Network was launched in coordination with the North Eastern Space Application Center (NESAC) , Umiam. Meghalaya is the second state in the Northeast after Tripura to achieve this Technological feat in the field of distant education. Under the EDUSAT Network, the Education Department hopes to improve the method of teaching and learning at different levels of education with 50 interactive terminal satellites. The EDUSAT Network with the main Hub located at the Head Office of DERT, Shillong is connected via Satellite Interactive Terminals set up in 7 District Institutes of Education Training, 3 Polytechnics, 4 Colleges of Teacher Education and 36 schools spread all over the State. The new facility is also aimed at bridging the gap between teaching and student communities for equality education in rural and urban areas of Meghalaya.
